I am a licensed mental health counselor
(LMHC) in the state of Washington. I hold an MA in Existential and Phenomenological
Psychology (clinical) from Seattle University. Licensure is accomplished
through the accumulation of many of hours of clinical work, through
extensive supervision of ones work and through a licensure exam. I regularly
attend trainings and consultation groups to sharpen my skills and clinical
thinking.
I also hold a BA in English and a PhD in Communication from the University
of Kentucky. My PhD is not a clinical degree, but these studies strongly
attune me to the importance of our human stories and to communication
in everyday and intimate life, and in therapy. I have done research
and published on the media and experiences of self and others. I am
the founding chair of the annual “Giving Voice to Experience” research
conference through Seattle University. My background enables me to think
flexibly.
Beyond university education, I have done coursework and training in psychoanalytic
psychotherapy. I have several years of advanced training in group facilitation
and have led Listening Mothers groups in the Puget Sound area. I undertook
two years of infant observation, a rigorous approach to understanding
early life and human development at the Center for Object Relations
in Seattle. Before opening my private practice, I worked for five years
at a community mental health center with people of all ages and from
varied cultural, religious, economic and ethnic backgrounds.
